Folkestone Ark Café
Someone asked a question about a little cargo ship that docked in Folkestone Harbour in the 1950s and 60s that brought back dozens of fond memories. In 1960, I was twelve and given a job peeling and chipping several hundredweight of spuds a day during the school holidays. The owner of the Ark was a Mr. Walker and his son-in-law Derek.Having met my quota of spuds and chips, I would carry large pots of custard and gravy followed by large trays of steak and kidney pie, then apple pie over to the Channel Café, now a Shell Shop in the Fish Market. The reason I enjoyed this task were the two pretty waitresses of about my age who worked in the café. They were pupils at St. Mary’s Convent School; they sent love letters to me written on a toilet roll. It is a wonder no one ever asked them why they spent so long in the toilet or continuously sharpened pencils. The other question no one ever asked is was there something wrong with the food.
